What Makes MOR Unique?

One of the defining features of the Michigan Outback Relay is that no two years are exactly the same. While we may revisit past routes, we continuously incorporate new trails and terrain to keep the experience fresh—challenging both first-time runners and seasoned participants alike.

The race atmosphere is what you make of it. Some teams come to compete, pushing themselves to claim victory in their division and take home the traveling trophy. Others embrace the journey, focusing on camaraderie, adventure, and the personal challenge the race presents.

A unique and growing tradition is the rise of second-generation teams—where children of past participants are stepping up to carry on their parents’ legacy, keeping the spirit of the race alive.

As Michigan’s oldest and longest team relay event, the Michigan Outback Relay continues to celebrate endurance, teamwork, and the thrill of exploration.

Course Description for MOR 2025

UPDATE 5/4/2025:

Due to the extensive damage in the Pigeon River Country State Forest, the DNR and Pigeon River Council is asking us to reroute so that we do not interfere with the cleanup process that will extend into the fall. The updated route is listed below. Thanks everyone for their patience as we had to work with other permitting agencies to get this course approved in short notice.

Day 1: St. Ignace to Paradise/Tahquamenon Falls

Start will begin in the St. Ignace area and head onto the North Country Trail. Runners will experience some varying conditions as we run away from the Lake Michigan shores, head into the heart of the UP, and then finish near the shores of Lake Superior. Camping will be provided at Whitefish Twp Schools in Paradise.

Day 2: Paradise/Tahquamenon Falls to St. Ignace

While this is a return trip from Day 1, the look of the trails will be different and obviously run differently too. If anyone gets a downhill leg on Day 1, make sure they get to do the return trip uphill! While we are finishing in St. Ignace, camping is going to be provided in Onaway, closer to the start of Day 3. We suggest that teams that want alternate lodging to consider looking in areas in the lower peninsula.

Day 3: Onaway to Rogers City

We will start just west on Onaway like last year, and send us east as we make our way to Rogers City. We will still see some back roads including some single track ORV trails. Could get a bit sandy on some legs. This will  transition to some fast running on the dirt roads, and then eventually the scenic glory leg running along Lake Huron. Finish will be on the beach in Rogers City like last year.

More specifics will be sent to captains after registration has concluded on June 1. However, please reach out to us at MichiganOutbackRelay@gmail.com if you have any questions!
