What Makes MOR Unique?
One of the defining features of the Michigan Outback Relay is that no two years are exactly the same. While we may revisit past routes, we continuously incorporate new trails and terrain to keep the experience fresh—challenging both first-time runners and seasoned participants alike.
The race atmosphere is what you make of it. Some teams come to compete, pushing themselves to claim victory in their division and take home the traveling trophy. Others embrace the journey, focusing on camaraderie, adventure, and the personal challenge the race presents.
A unique and growing tradition is the rise of second-generation teams—where children of past participants are stepping up to carry on their parents’ legacy, keeping the spirit of the race alive.
As Michigan’s oldest and longest team relay event, the Michigan Outback Relay continues to celebrate endurance, teamwork, and the thrill of exploration.
Course Description for MOR 2025
This year we are back in the lower peninsula, taking on some past routes and including new challenges. All said, we will be spending time on three major trail systems, Shore to Shore Trail, North Country Trail, and the High Country Pathway.
Day 1, we will be starting in Grayling by the high school. We will make our way from Grayling and head north toward the Jordan River and then make our way to Weber Lake for the finish. As with any year passing through the Jordan Valley, we need to prepare for navigational challenges and extreme elevation changes as we pass through.
Day 2 will start at Onaway High School and head to the High Country Pathway. New for 2025, we are going to attempt to complete the full trail in one day. A first time for this relay. Lots of tall ferns, hills, and potential swamps will make for quite an adventure. Whoever makes the journey up Rattle Snake Hill will get quite a view of Michigan’s landscape, but you will have to earn that view!
Day 3 will start just west on Onaway like last year, and send us east as we make our way to Rogers City. We will still see some trail in the morning, transition to some fast running on the dirt roads, and then eventually the scenic glory leg running along Lake Huron. Finish will be on the beach in Rogers City like last year.
More specifics will be sent to captains after registration has concluded on June 1. However, please reach out to us at MichiganOutbackRelay@gmail.com if you have any questions!
